We are not alone on Earth – we share our planet with many species of bacteria, fungi, plants and animals. We want our species to live long and well on this planet. This is only possible if we take good care of nature and other living beings. Biology teaches us this and therefore matters everyone in one way or another!
We are currently experiencing a leap in the development of technologies and unsustainable use of resources on our planet. The result is a biodiversity crisis, destruction of the natural environment, and a growing human population. These are challenges that must be urgently addressed and research in the natural sciences, such as biology, ecology and chemistry, must be integrated.
The Biology Department is a diverse community of biologists, ecologists, chemists, and educators committed to understanding the living world from the molecular basis to global ecosystems. We acquire new knowledge, train future researchers and teachers who are open-minded and flexible enough to meet the challenges of the future and pass on what they have learned to future generations.
We conduct a range of cutting-edge research, recruit postgraduates, and act as researchers and teachers. Our postgraduate training opens up new career opportunities in a wide range of scientific fields. We provide professional development for teachers. We work hard to keep pace with developments in our ever-changing field.
